Problem Statement
Residential garbage bins are a standardized part of waste collection infrastructure across the City of Toronto, commonly ranging from 120 L to 360 L in capacity. Following waste collection, the responsibility of cleaning and maintaining these bins falls entirely on homeowners. Over time, organic residue, liquids, and debris accumulate on the interior surfaces, creating persistent contamination, unpleasant odors, and bacterial growth.

Current cleaning methods are inefficient and unsanitary. Homeowners typically rinse bins manually using a garden hose or scrub them with long-handled brushes, exposing themselves directly to contaminants and aerosolized bacteria. Additionally, wastewater generated during this process drains onto driveways, garages, or lawns, spreading contaminants into the surrounding residential environment rather than disposing of them safely.

There is currently no accessible, purpose-built solution designed specifically for residential users that can effectively clean standard garbage bins in a contained, automated, and hygienic manner. Thus, the client requested our team to design and build a compact, consumer-friendly system capable of thoroughly washing bins while safely capturing and directing contaminated wastewater into the proper sewage drainage system.
How The Machine Works
User loads bin in front of the machine with its lid opened and facing the reinforced lip to the front side
User presses "Lock" for the comb mechanism to capture bin's reinforced lip and lift it up to lock it with the top bar
User presses "Flip" for the system to flip inside the wash zone, carrying the bin inside
User presses "Wash" for the internal multi jet nozzle to start cleaning all interior side walls and base of bin. When done, user presses "Open."
